Adams – Town police are investigating an alleged scam operating from Canada and are warning area residents to beware of mail from a firm called “Euro Millions.â€
Town police Chief Donald Poirot is asking anyone who may have had dealings with the lottery-type operation to contact town police at 413-743-1212.
According to police, the Euro Millions group sends letters through the mail that informs the recipients that they have been selected at random to participate in a lottery with $15,000,000 in total prize money. The targeted persons are told that to qualify for the lottery, they must provide a bank check or a personal check in the amount of $20 to Euro Millions. People are told that they will be informed of any winnings within a year.
Police said that when the initial $20 check is received and clears the individual’s bank, Euro Millions sends a “winnings check†to the individual. However, before the “winner†can cash the check and collect any monies, another check must be provided to Euro Millions under the guise of covering “legal and processing fees.â€
Those holding what they believe to be a check for lottery winnings then discover that the check is invalid and cannot be cashed, police said.
