Stamford, Vt. BurglariesBy Susan Bush 12:00AM / Thursday, July 28, 2005
Stamford,Vt. - Vermont state troopers and Clarksburg, Mass. police officers are investigating a series of Stamford burglaries that occurred over the past month.
Shaftsbury State Police barracks Lt. Stephen Poirot said that camps located in remote areas accessible by rural roads appear to be the primary targets. Some of the roads run through parts of Clarksburg into Stamford.
“Troopers have been working with the Clarksburg police on this,†Poirot said during a July 28 telephone interview.
Specifics about what items have been taken were not immediately available. Poirot offered advice to camp owners.
“Don’t leave anything valuable there [at the camp],†he said. “It doesn’t matter if you lock the doors or not, these people break in.â€
However, camps should not be left unsecured, Poirot said, and he suggested taking additional steps, such as shuttering and locking windows, using more than one lock to secure a door, and placing cable-type locks on large items such as power-supply generators.
In other words, do not make it easy for a thief to take the property.
“These people know that they have all day to break in,†Poirot said. “But criminals are lazy; they don’t want to work and that’s why they’re out there stealing. The harder you make it for them, the better.â€
Poirot noted that the some thieves may move on to another location if a specific site is heavily secured. And cutting through numerous locks and cables requires time and can generate noise, which might attract attention, he said.
Camp burglaries have occurred throughout the years regionally and usually increase during warm weather.
If someone suspects a burglary is in progress, do not attempt to intervene, but call state police immediately at 802-442-5421. Anyone with information about the breaks is asked to contact police.
