Two-Car Collision in North Adams Injures One

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A two-car accident on upper East Main Street sent one woman to the hospital on Thursday afternoon.

The collision was reported at 4:35 p.m. of an accident at East Main above Pleasant Street. A Chrysler PT Cruiser going north up around the "S" curve of the narrow street appeared to have been struck by a Dodge Neon sedan heading down.

Both bright red cars sustained damage. The Cruiser was hit on the driver's side door and the Neon had damage around the driver's side headlight. There was other damage on the Neon that didn't appear to be related to the accident.

Emergency responders helped the driver exit the Cruiser; she was taken by ambulance to North Adams Regional Hospital. Traffic was limited while the scene was being cleared.

The accident was still under investigation and police at the scene had not yet determined the sequence of events.

     

Tour Bus Plows Into Snowpile at Hairpin Turn

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — A tour bus ran into brake trouble coming down the Mohawk Trail on shortly before noon on Saturday and plowed into a pile of snow when it couldn't manage the Hairpin Turn. The snow stopped the bus before it could hit the wall in front of the Golden Eagle Restaurant right at the sharp turn. No was reported seriously injured in the accident.

Cases heard before Judge John Agostini on Monday, February 25.

Brandon Wood, 32, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to a single count of unarmed robbery in connection with the robbery of the Elm Street branch of Greylock Federal Credit Union on March 30, 2012.

He was sentenced to three and a half to five years at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction.

Nicholas Bondini, 29, of North Adams pleaded guilty of two counts of conspiracy to violate drug laws and a single count of possession of methadone with intent to distribute.

He was sentenced to serve concurrent one year sentences at the Berkshire County House of Correction. The incidents allegedly occurred in Adams and North Adams between November 1, 2010 and November 25, 2010.

Six counts of possession of Oxycontin with intent to distribute, seven counts of distribution of oxycodone, two counts of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and 11 counts of drug violation within a school zone were dismissed by the state.

Cases heard before Judge John Agostini on Tuesday, February 26.

Marc Tucker, 34, of North Adams pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

He was sentenced to six months at the Berkshire County House of Correction. The incidents occurred in North Adams on November 5, 2010 and November 15, 2010.

Two counts of drug violation in a school zone were dismissed by the state.

Sergio Ponce, 27, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty of single counts of improper sale of a firearm, illegal ownership of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card and receiving stolen property over $250.

Ponce admitted to selling an SKS assault rifle to an individual in Pittsfield on November 8, 2011. He also pleaded guilty to a single count of intimidation of a witness or other person.

The incident occurred in Pittsfield between December 3, 2012 and February 9, 2013. He was sentenced to serve concurrent two and a half to three years state prison sentences at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction on the charges of improper sale of a firearm, receiving stolen property over $250 and intimidation of a witness. He was given concurrent time at the Berkshire County House of Correction on the other charges.

Jacob Sweener, 22, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to violate drug laws, to wit: possession of cocaine. H

His case was continued without a finding for six months. Sweener conspired with others to possess cocaine in Pittsfield on March 4, 2012.

Mark Hunter, 52, of Springfield pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of heroin, possession of cocaine, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license - his second offense - and number plate violation.

He was placed on two years probation on the charges of possession of heroin, possession of cocaine and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. The other charge was placed on file. The charges stem from a motor vehicle stop in Lee on January 27, 2012.

Ronald Sanford, 22, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of heroin with intent to distribute and drug violation within a school zone.

He was sentenced to one to two years at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction on the possession charge. He was given two and a half to three years on the school zone charge.

The charges stem from an incident in Pittsfield on July 30, 2012.

Ronald King, 52, of Ballston Spa, N.Y. pleaded guilty of two counts of assault and battery in connection with an incident in Pittsfield involving a 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man on June 7, 2011.

He was sentenced to serve 104 days at the Berkshire County House of Correction and placed on two years probation.

Joseph Berry, 22, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to 23 counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime, 20 counts of breaking and entering in the daytime, 19 counts of vandalize property, seven counts of illegal possession of a firearm, three counts of larceny from a building, three counts of larceny over $250, two counts of breaking into a depository and single counts of possession of burglarious tools and receiving stolen property over $250.

He was sentenced to serve concurrent 18 month sentences at the Berkshire County House of Correction.

Twenty counts of malicious destruction of personal property, seven counts of carrying a dangerous weapon and single counts of receiving or possessing a stolen motor vehicle and common and notorious thief were dismissed by the state. The charges stem from a series of break ins in Pittsfield between June 1, 2011 and September 13, 2011 and a series of breaks at a storage facility in Hinsdale between August 14, 2011 and August 15, 2011.
 

     

Truck Slides Off Road On Mohawk Trail in North Adams

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A black truck slid off Route 2 on Wednesday night causing delays in traffic.

Police received a call of a black truck weaving down the Mohawk Trail at about 5:40 p.m. and moments later, the vehicle had crashed. For more than an hour, police, ambulance and fire were on the scene but the driver and a child who were in the vehicle did not appear to have suffered injuries.

The vehicle was lodged against a hill and Mohawk Auto Wrecking had difficulty pulling the vehicle out. Meanwhile, traffic was reduced to one lane.

Freezing rain has made the roads slick Wednesday night and police were calling for additional sanding.

No further information was available at this time.

 

     

Worker Injured in North Adams Fire Escape Collapse

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A man was taken to the hospital after falling about 15 feet when a fire escape collapsed on North Church Street.

According to Fire Director Stephen Meranti, the man was working in the Flatiron Block on Wednesday afternoon and was climbing down the fire escape when the ladder portion detached from the platform. The ladder and the man both tumbled onto sidewalk. The man, whose name Meranti did not have available, suffered a laceration on his head.

The road was shut down for about 30 minutes while North Adams Ambulance transported him to Berkshire Medical Center
