Wahconah Softball Wins Western Mass. Title

Staff Reports

The Wahconah softball team captured the Western Massachusetts Division II championship on Monday, defeating Hampshire 3-0 in Amherst.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Kelcie Yarmey drove in the go-ahead run, then teammate Amanda McLeod drove in two more.

Sam Burjner picked up the victory for the top-seeded Warriors, tossing a complete-game shutout with three strikeouts.

Yarmey had three hits and Gabby Lavinio smacked two for Wahconah, which is right back at it Tuesday in a state semifinal game. The Warriors will take on Hudson (Central Mass. champs) at 5 p.m. at Worcester State College.

In other action Monday:

- The Mount Everett baseball team's Cinderella season came to an end in the Western Mass. D-III title game. The 13th-seeded Eagles were defeated by No. 2 Ware 5-3.

- The Lenox tennis teams were both defeated in their respective state semifinal matches. The boys were swept 5-0 by Bromfield, while the girls lost 4-1 to Hopedale.

Over the weekend:

- Nik Andrews capped a tremendous high school athletic career with another impressive performance. The Drury graduate placed sixth in the 400-meter dash at the New England Track & Field Championship Meet  on Saturday. The regional meet was held at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Conn.
