GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass — The Mount Greylock boys' basketball team saved its best effort for the last quarter on Friday, outscoring Monument Mountain 16-4 in the final frame to rally back for a 38-36 win on the road.
The Mounties (8-2) struggled to score points for a second consecutive game but somehow figured things out in time to erase a 10-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter. Bob Thistle's club led the Spartans (3-7) by three points at halftime, only to see the hosts go on a 16-3 run in the third quarter. Greylock climbed back into the game in the fourth, however, and eventually hit the front end of a pair of 1-and-1s in the final 25 seconds to seal the win.
"It was a hard-fought victory on the road," Thistle said. "We have been struggling to score points for two games, but our defense has been solid, holding Drury to 45 points and Monument to 36. The kids pulled together and found a way to make up 10 points in the fourth quarter. It was a great win on the road. We are happy to be 8-2 at the halfway point but know we have a lot of work to do in the second half."
John Kinne scored a game-high 13 points for Monument, while the Mounties had two other players score in double figures. Sophomore Tyrell Thomas came up with 12 points and nine rebounds, while junior Hank Barrett chipped in with 10 points and three assists.
Greylock next plays St. Joe's in a key South Division matchup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
