Royal Biographer To Speak at Ventfort Hall

LENOX, Mass. — Hugo Vickers, biographer, lecturer, broadcaster and an acknowledged expert on the royal family, will recount Gladys Deacon who followed Consuelo Vanderbilt as wife of the 9th Duke of Marlborough.

His presentation on Sunday, March 5 at 3:30 pm will be followed by a champagne tea at Ventfort Hall.

According to a press release, Vickers knew Deacon for two years at the end of her life. She was 94 and he was 23.

This lecture will tell the dramatic story of Gladys from her heyday in Paris, through her Bohemian years, to the trials of Blenheim, and then her long seclusion as a recluse and her 15 years confined to a psychiatric hospital.

Vickers' first book was about her, Gladys Deacon, Duchess of Marlborough (1881-1977), in whom he became interested when he was 16 years old.   When he was 23, he found the Duchess in the psychogeriatric ward of a mental hospital and talked to her for two years until her death at the age of 96.  He researched in Europe and America and published "Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough" in 1979.  Because there was considerably more material available 40 years on, he revised this book for a new edition, published in 2020, as The Sphinx (and paperback in 2021)..

Vickers has covered events from the first wedding of the Prince of Wales, the funerals of Diana, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip, and many royal weddings.

Great Barrington Price Chopper Now Market 32

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

The new store features a larger pharmacy, wine and beer and more organic foods and produce.
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — All three Price Choppers in the county have now been upgraded to Market 32s.

Regional and local employees cut the ribbon Friday morning on the final rebranded store, at 300 Stockbridge Road. The modern makeover of the 49,500 square-foot space will now provide the same shopping experience for all local customers.

It is the company's 51st rebrand into a Market 32 store.

"Throughout our stores in the Berkshires, we have introduced the Market 32 brand one store at a time. Pittsfield, Lenox, and we knew that this building was older and I think customers were probably a little disappointed that to go to Pittsfield and Lenox, you have the newest store that we offer, and this was sort of an older building," said Stephen Speelman, the grocer's zone director.

"It took a little work but we were able to finally bring this brand to the town of Great Barrington and now, we're consistent."

He said the Market 32 models appeal to the younger generation while not alienating the older generations. This location now has an expanded pharmacy, a beer and wine department, and an emphasis on organic food and produce.

"The biggest thing is, this is about the way we treat customers. We really want customers to feel that we really care about the fact that they shop here, that they chose us," Speelman said.
