Berkshire County Day Students Score on Latin Exam

LENOX, Mass. — Berkshire Country Day School has announced that 25 Upper School students were awarded certificates and medals for their high scores on the 2013 National Latin Exam. The NLE exam is sponsored both by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. More than 154,000 students from all 50 states and 15 foreign countries took the test in March.

For the Introduction to Latin Exam, the following awards were earned by seventh-graders:

Ribbon and Achievement Certificate: Genevieve Franck, Great Barrington; Achievement Certificates: Michelle Lipson of Great Barrington and Ruby Merritt of Lenox

For the Latin I National Exam, the following awards were earned by seventh-graders:

Gold Summa Cum Laude: Alex Lederman of Pittsfield; Cameron Sweener of Lenox; Evan Sylbert of Monterey, and Ben Zoeller of New Lebanon, N.Y. Alex and Ben were also recognized for receiving perfect scores on the exam.

Silver Maxima Cum Laude: Noah Beckwith and Stephen Taglieri, both of Pittsfield, and Julian Lindenmaier of Stockbridge.

Magna Cum Laude: Nicolas Adams of Canaan, N.Y., Bella Currie of Pittsfield and Clement Keats of Ghent, N.Y.

For the Latin II National Exam, the following awards were earned by eighth-graders:



Magna Cum Laude: Jesse Kramer and Jackson Rich, both Pittsfield; Asa Mervis of Great Barrington; Cooper Parker of  Hudson, N.Y., and Emily Yeager of Lenox.

Cum Laude: Jack Gibson of Lenox, Alec Goffin of Great Barrington and Teddy Michaels of Richmond.

For the Latin III National Exam, the following awards were earned by ninth-graders:

Gold Summa Cum Laude: Sam Kittredge of Dalton and Emma Lezberg and Jacob Lezberg, both of Pittsfield.

Magna Cum Laude: Elise Ghitman of Ashley Falls.

BCD students study Latin from Grade 6 through Grade 9 with teacher Eugénie Fawcett of Tyringham.

"We are extremely proud of all of our students for their achievements and exceptional placements on this year's National Latin Exam," said Head of School Paul Lindenmaier. "It is a testament to the quality of our longstanding Latin program and our faculty's commitment to excellence."

Third-grade students in Brandon Boule's art class at Lee Elementary School showcased a diverse selection of men's apparel at Zabian's Clothing, located at 19 Main St.
 
The merchandise includes classic and updated traditional styles in suits, sport coats, ties, slacks and jeans, along with more modern and colorful options.
 
"My father was more of a traditional dresser, and that translated it more for him to buy more classic, traditional clothes. For me, I like to be more of an updated traditional guy. I still have the classics, but I put a little spice into it as well," second-generation owner Ali Zabian said.
 
"I love color, so I have a lot of suits and sport coats that are a little bit different than the norm, but I still carry the basic blues and things."
 
The store was established in 1904 and has been at its current location for more than 100 years.
