Thomas W. Leavens Sr.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Thomas William Leavens Sr., 97, of 41 Hall St. died Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Williamstown Commons.
Born in Smithfield, R.I., on July 29, 1913, son of Thomas N. and Mary Phillips Leavens, he attended Rhode Island schools.
Mr. Leavens owned and operated Petro-Land Fuel Co. in Adams for about 12 years until his retirement. Before that, he worked at Mohawk Stone Products for about 25 years. In the 1950s, he operated the Red Bat Cave Bar and Gas Station in New Ashford.
He was a former member of the Elks. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed cooking.
His wife, the former Irene Meekin, whom he married on Aug. 4, 1941, died on April 21, 2002.
He leaves two daughters, JoAnn Gagne of Adams and Janet Bombardier of Williamstown; three sons, Bruce Meekin of Tempe, Ariz., Thomas W. Leavens Jr. of Wewahitchka, Fla., and Francis Leavens of Williamstown; a sister, Elizabeth Evans of California; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Seven brothers and sisters are deceased, including Helen Murphy.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Leavens will be celebrated Monday, March 28, at 11 a.m. at Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
