Joseph A. Zona, 83

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Joseph Anthony Zona, 83, of 17 D St. died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at his home. Born in North Adams on April 21, 1927, son of Anthony and Mary Bernardo Zona, he attended the former Johnson School and Drury High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the USS Mataco in the Pacific. He received the American Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Navy Occupation Service with Asia Clasp and World War II Victory medals. Mr. Zona worked at the former Sprague Electric Co. for more than 30 years. He was last employed as manager and bartender of Dr. George L. Curran VFW Post 996. He was a communicant of teh former St. Anthony of Padua Church. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foriegn Wars and Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and a member of the Greylock Community Club. Mr. Zona also was a member of the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriffs Association. He enjoyed cooking, making wine, horse racing and playing poker. His wife, the former Ellen Louise Perras, whom he married on Aug. 19, 1950, in the former Notre Dame Church, died on Dec. 13, 1996. He leaves a daughter, Beverly Whitney and her husband, Brayton, of North Adams; two sons, Richard A. Zona of North Adams and John F. Zona and his wife, Consuela, of Sunrise, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Como of Pittsfield and Madeline O'Neil of North Adams; three grandchildren, Danielle Zona Whitney and her fiance, Jesse Hakes, of Adams, Brayton Henry Whitney of North Adams and John Joseph Zona of Sunrise; two great-grandsons, William Whitney Hakes and Tyler Joseph Hakes of Adams, and nieces and nephews including his caregiver, Diane O'Neil. A granddaughter, Ashley Elizabeth Whitney, died May 12, 1980. FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Zona will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 22, at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday morning from 9 until 10:30 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Angel of Hope Children's Memorial in care of the funeral home.
