Ronald C. Loring, 61
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Ronald Carmen Loring, 61, of 154 Liberty St., died April 21, 2009, at his home.
Born in North Adams on May 9, 1947, a son of Michael E. and Elaine E. Alderman Loring, he was educated in city schools and graduated from Drury High School in 1967. In his youth, he was an outstanding basketball player and, in fall 1962, was named as one of the one of the top eighth-grade basketball players in New England by Street & Smith, a national basketball magazine, Street and Smith. It was the first time that an eighth grader from this area was recognized by a national publication. The article stated that Mr. Loring had a great future ahead of him at Drury, where he made the varsity team.
A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he entered the service in November 1968 and served aboard the USS Tutuila until 1972 and remained in the Naval Reserves until 1974.
Mr. Loring retired in 1997 as an assembler from the former General Cable Corp. in Williamstown. He was first employed by the former Hunter Outdoor Products and Nassif's Professional Pharmacy until entering Navy. From 1973 to 1982, he worked at the former Jarisch Paper Box Co. and was self-employed from 1982 to 1984. after a short time with former Xtyal Corp. in 1985, he returned to the Jarisch as a machine operator until 1989. He also worked at the former Ames Department Store and for Berkshire Custom Coating in Pittsfield for a short time.
He was known for his love of the YMCA. He could be found there at all hours of the day and night playing basketball and table tennis.
He was the last of his immediate family.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services and burial for Mr. Loring took place at the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, North Adams was in charge of arrangements.
