Vivian E. Swift, 93

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Vivian Evelyn Swift, 93, of 1027 Massachusetts Ave. died Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born in North Adams on Oct. 1, 1917, daughter of Clarence and Evelyn Bedard Scrivens, she attended North Adams schools. Mrs Swift and her husband, Ashley C. Swift, founded Ashley Swift & Sons, Plumbing and Heating Co. in 1948. She also had worked at the former Sprague Electric Co. Primarily a homemaker, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a communicant of the former Incarnation Church and a member of its Ladies' Guild. An avid golfer, she was a member of the North Adams Country Club, where she had won the Women's Club Championship. She also enjoyed nature and traveling. Her husband, whom she married Sept. 7, 1940, died on April 10, 1987. She leaves three daughters, Anne Benedetti and her husband, Donald, of Natick, Mary Joan Swift and her significant other, Jeffrey, of Stamford, Vt., and Patricia Vareschi and her husband, John, of North Adams; three sons, John "Jack" Swift and his wife, Jean, of North Adams, Peter Swift and his wife, Georgia, of Naples, Fla., and Thomas Swift and his wife, Mary, of Lee; three sisters, Margaret Perreault and Florence Haskins, both of North Adams, and Alice Haworth of Columbia, S.C.; a brother, William L. Scrivens of North Adams; 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Lillian DeSanty and Mary Scrivens, and brothers Fred Scrivens, Clarence "Jack" Scrivens and Henry Scrivens. FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Swift will be Monday, Nov. 29, at 8:15 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, Nov. 28, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of the funeral home.
