Byard V. Hayden, 88

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Byard V. Hayden, 88, of 151 Prospect St. died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at home. Born in North Adams on Aug. 25, 1921, a son of Harry and Mabel Farnham Hayden, he graduated from Drury High School in 1940. A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served with the storied 10th Mountain Division ski troop. He saw combat in Italy and received the Bronze Star. His loyalty to the 10th Mountain Division extended during the postwar years, and he attended reunions and paraded proudly throughout the Northeast. Mr. Hayden was employed at Mount Hope Farm orchards, the former General Cable Co. and, lastly, at Williams College, all in Williamstown. He took an early interest in the outdoor life and devoted much time to camping, hiking and picnicking. His favorite haunt was Mount Greylock, where he skied the Thunderbolt Ski Trail that was fashioned by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. He enjoyed family hikes through New England and on the Long Trail of Vermont and the Appalachian Trail. His retirement years kept him busy as he and his sister, Priscilla Hayden, operated a business taking care of peoples' pets. Besides his sister, with whom he made his home, he leaves two brothers, Hugh Hayden and his wife, Evelyn, of Greenfield and Mahlon Hayden and his wife, Jean, of Stafford, Conn., his cousin Carolyn Neville and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE — Graveside services for Mr. Hayden will take place Saturday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. at the family plot in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for Fidelco or Doberman Rescue Unlimited through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
