Jean H. Canedy, 88

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Jean Hamer Canedy, 88, of Rockridge, 25 Coles Meadow Road, Northampton, died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Hospice of the Fisher Home in North Amherst. She and her husband, Lewis Homer "Bud" Canedy, had operated the former Golden Eagle Gift Shop. Born in Greenfield on April 21, 1922, daughter of Albert N. and Ruth Hamer Hardy, she attended North Adams schools and graduated from the Drury High School. She also graduated from Lasell Junior College in Newton in 1942. A Navy veteran of World War II, she achieved the rank of yeoman, 2nd class. She was stationed in Chatham at the Marconi Communications Center as a communications specialist. During the war, the center was the primary East Coast site for ship-to-shore transmissions, as well as monitoring radio transmissions from Berlin and where German U-Boat activity off the coast of the eastern seaboard was tracked. The Canedys owned the Golden Eagle Gift and Antique Shop located at the Hairpin Turn on the Mohawk Trail for many years until their retirement. They spent their retirement years in Yarmouthport and later moved to Hadley. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams and of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Barnstable. She, along with her mother, was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Her husband, whom she married on May 5, 1945, died on May 7, 2006. They honeymooned in New York City, and participated in the historic celebration at Times Square on V-E Day. She leaves two daughters, Ann Parisien and her husband, William A. Parisien Jr., of Hadley and Susan Canedy of Farmington, Conn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott H. and Anne B. Heekin-Canedy and his of Stamford, Conn.; five grandchildren, William A. Parisien III, Adam D. Parisien, Katherine Jean Lavo, Jameson G. Lavo and Siobhan S. Heekin-Canedy, and nieces and nephews. Her brother, Albert N. Hardy Jr., is deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE - A memorial service for Mrs. Canedy will be celebrated on Saturday, May 8, 11 at St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams by her niece, the Rev. Karen Hardy, officiating. Burial with veteran's honors will follow in Southview Cemetery.
