Moira P. Buoni, 72
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Moira Pauline Buoni, 72, of 511 Stratton Road, died Monday morning, April 26, 2010, shortly after admission to the emergency room at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Born in London on Dec. 25, 1937, daughter of Stanley and Amy Sweeny, she graduated from Norwich City College in Norfolk and completed her general nursing training at Prince of Wales General Hospital in London, where she earned her state registered nurse degree in 1959. She also completed a midwifery certificate, having trained at Brighton General Hospital in Sussex and Welwyn Garden City Hospital in Hertfordshire.
She emigrated to the United States in 1962.
Mrs. Buoni joined the operating room staff at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield in 1981 and retired after 22 years of service. She earlier worked as an assistant operating room supervisor at Prince of Wales General Hospital and in operating rooms of several New York hospitals, including New Rochelle Hospital Medical Center in Rochelle and St. Joseph's Hospital and Crouse Irving Hospital, both in Syracuse.
Once she retired, Mrs. Buoni was a volunteer nurse for several years with her husband, Dr. John O. Buoni, on surgical missions providing gynecological care in Honduras and Equador. She also donated her time to various nonprofit organizations and fundraisers over the years. When first arriving in the Berkshires, she worked with the North Adams Chamber of Commerce and Northern Berkshire Council of the Arts to organize social events and the Berkshire Soccer Association to promote youth soccer.
Mrs. Buoni was a former president of the Berkshire Chapter of the American Cancer Society and served on the board of Pine Cobble School. More recently, she was the president of the Berkshire Chapter of World Clubs International and participated in numerous overseas conferences. She also volunteered at the Clark Art Institute and the tourist booth in Williamstown.
A loyal supporter of the arts, she regularly attended plays, concerts, exhibits and dance performances, being especially fond of Jacob's Pillow in Becket. She enjoyed reading, gardening and daily walks with friends. In her teen years, she biked through Europe, which fostered a love of travel that lasted throughout her life.
She and her husband were married Oct 3, 1965, in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Besides her husband of 44 years, she leaves two sons, Paul Buoni and his wife, Diane, of Albany, N.Y., and Jonathan Buoni of North Adams; a daughter, Alicia Buoni and her husband, Thomas Brennan, of Portland, Ore., and two grandchildren, Luca and Colin.
She was predeceased by her brother, Roger Sweeny.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service for Mrs. Buoni will take place Friday, April 30, at 11 at St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 29, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams.
