Lawrence E. Mattison, 92
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. â€' Lawrence Elmer Mattison, 92, of 199 Luce Road died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at Williamstown Commons.
Born in South Shaftsbury, Vt., on March 22, 1917, son of Carl H. and Etta Tinkham Mattison, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School with the class of 1935.
Mr. Mattison owned and operated the Mount Williams Greenhouse, which he purchased in 1942 with Phil Cook after being an employee there. He operated the business for 33 years until selling it in January 1976.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church since 1933, serving on many committees including budget and finance. He also was a member of Williamstown Grange 366 for more than 65 years. He maintained a great interest in agriculture, plants and livestock, and their long-term preservation, throughout his life.
He also enjoyed traveling and had visited all 50 states and most of Canada. He spent winters in Florida for 12 years and, in his younger years, enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He and his wife, the former Irene Lapine, were married Oct. 12, 1940.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Lawrence C. Mattison and his wife, Paula, of Cheshire; a daughter, Anne C. Mattison and her fiance, Dana Scholtz, of Andover; two grandchildren, Michelle Mattison and her husband, Stephen O'Day, of Hatfield and Melissa Mattison and her husband, Glenn Gulotta, of Northampton, and four great-grandchildren, Jack, Cole, Grace and Mattie.
His sister, Florence Richards, is deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE â€' The funeral for Mr. Mattison will be celebrated Friday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Williamstown. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
