Abbott Gomberg, 88

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Abbott Gomberg, 88, of Jerome Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at home with his wife, Nada Samuels, at his side. Born in Fall River, on May 8, 1921, son of Alexander and Gertrude Gomberg, he attended the Massachusetts School of Art. As a student, he had several drawings, paintings and etchings exhibited in galleries in Boston and New York, including the National Institute of Drawing in New York. He also studied at the Art Student League in New York. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Signal Corps in Europe. Mr. Gomberg was an advertising executive for Macy's Corp., retiring at age 65 as vice president for advertising and publicity. He created and supervised radio and television advertising along with news print. After retiring, he devoted himself to teaching and painting and taught at the Parsons School of Design in New York. He also taught a drawing workshop at the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and exhibited his paintings in several galleries. He moved to Williamstown after marrying Samuels and continued painting in his beloved studio. He was an avid fly fisherman and played tennis until his later years. He was also a student of history with considerable knowledge of the Holocaust and Civil War. His first wife, the former Miriam Krasow, is deceased, as is his son, Peter Gomberg. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Lisa Szeman of Pittsfield. FUNERAL NOTICE — There will be a brief graveside service on Friday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. at Stockbridge Cemetery, followed by calling hours at his Williamstown home. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, is in charge of arrangements.
