Arthur J. Dassatti, 91

READSBORO, Vt. — Arthur James Dassatti, 91, of 74 Canal Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center. He served on the Board of Selectman from 1957 to 1967. Born in Readsboro on Sept. 23, 1918, son of Pompeo and Colomba Chiste Dassatti, he attended Readsboro schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Dassatti returned to Readsboro in 1944 and became employed by Deerfield Glassine in 1944 and later Deerfield Specialty, retiring in 1982. Following his military service, he had worked for the former Cape Ann Tool Co. in Rockport, Mass., for two years before moving to Holyoke, Mass., to work at the former Moore Drop Forge Co. (later Danaher Tool Co.) in Springfield. Long active in community service, he also was elected to the Readsboro board of trustees in 1952 and served until 1984. In 1971, he was appointed cemetery sexton and, in 1974, helped establish the Readsboro Cemetery Commission on which he served. He was a communicant of St. Joachim's Church and a member of Walter Case Post 29 American Legion. In 1994, Lions Club presented him with the Melvin Jones Fellows Award for dedicated humanitarian service. He and his wife, the former Elide "Alice" Comai, were married on May 17, 1947 in St. Joachim's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, James A. Dassatti and his fiancée, Elizabeth Murphy, of Jacksonville; a grandson, Stephen J. Dassatti and his wife, Jennifer, of Great Falls, Mont., and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Caroline Gottardi and Archie, Attilio and Gelindo Dassatti. FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Dassatti will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Joachim's Church. Burial will be in the spring in Village Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, Dec. 28, from 5 to 8 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joachim's Church in care of the funeral home.
