Charles E. Austin, 90

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Charles Edward Austin, 90, of 62 Pines Lodge Park died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Bennington, Vt., on May 3, 1919, a son of Edward and Rhea Marsh Austin, he attended schools in North Bennington and Hoosick Falls, N.Y., graduating from Hoosick Falls High School with the class of 1937. He also graduated from Vermont State Agriculture College, now Vermont Technical College. Mr. Austin was superintendent of the water and sewage department for the town of Williamstown retiring in 1984 with 31 years of service. He was first employed at Filmore Farms and later at Thomas Wing Farm. He then obtained the position of manager of Modern Dairy Farm and, from 1950 to 1953, also managed the Norris Phelps Farm, both in South Williamstown. He was well known in the area for his chicken, egg and vegetables stand on Hancock Road. After retiring, he wintered in Florida. An avid walker, he also enjoyed playing golf and bridge, gardening. He was a member of Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth Russell, were married March 25, 1941. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Barbara Austin of North Adams and Sandra Cunningham and her husband, Stephen, of Williamstown; a son, Dennis J. Austin and his wife, Laurie, of North Adams; a sister, Margaret Jean Settanny of Cohoes, N.Y.; a brother, William Austin and his wife Ann of Brunswick, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Wayne, Fritz, Travis, Brody, Meghan, Avery and Amber, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, in infancy, and his brothers Harold, Karl and Edward Austin Jr. FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Austin will take place Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 11 at Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown. Private burial will take in Southlawn Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for Second Congregational Church or to the Village Ambulance through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
