Moses Haile, 100

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Moses "Moe" Haile, 100, of Rosseter Street died peacefully Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at home. Born in 1909 in Camden, S.C., son of Ida and Henry Haile, he moved to Great Barrington in 1931. Mr. Haile was employed for many years by Kaplan Cleaners and Reid's Cleaners. He also was active in sports, coaching and umpiring games in the community for many years. He was a member of the Lions Club and was given the Melvin Jones Fellow Award by the Lions Club International Foundation. He was the recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award given by the Great Barrington Rotary Club, and the Outstanding Citizen Award presented by the Great Barrington branch of the Massachusetts Police Association for his devotion to youth athletes. An avid golfer until the age of 98, he played at the Old Barrington School Course and later years with his son in the GEAA Roto Rooter and Pontoosuc Lake Country Club in Pittsfield. He bowled until the age of 99 at Cove Lanes in Great Barrington. On his 100th birthday, the Great Barrington Board of Selectman recognized him for his years of service to the community. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, the former Evelyn Henderson; four daughters, Barbara Mainer and her husband, Linton, of Riverside, Calif., Debra Vallarta of Medord, Ore., Myrtle Haile-Suber and her husband, Elijah, of West Hartford, Conn., and Patience Haile of Bloomfield, Conn.; two sons, Moses Haile Jr. and his wife, Joanne, of Pittsifeld and Henry Haile and his wife, Eunice, of Hartford, Conn.; five grandchildren, Steve and Timothy Haile of Pittsfield, Roland, Collette and Simone Manier of California, and five great-grandchildren, Alexis, Marcus, Zaryn, Jordyn and Andre, all of California, and two special nieces, Anne Penn of Maryland and Shirley Clarke of New York. FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services celebrating the life of the Mr. Haile will be conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 10 from Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington by the Rev. Willard H. Durant. A private burial will be held. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 4 until 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Elder Services Inc. or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires through the fneral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. God Bless 'Moses' Haille. He must have been a really nice man...I wish that I could have got to meet him....I'm sure he would have had so many many stories to tell about his life and times. I am in awe that he could still bowl and golf in his late years. WOW!!!! Condolences to the family.
