John B. Mazza, 98

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. â€' John Bernard Mazza, 98, of 24 Veazie St. died Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Williamstown Commons. He was a founder of the former Molly's Bakery. Born in Croton on Hudson, N.Y., on April 1, 1911, son of Thomas and Mary Grande Mazza, he was at an early age when his family moved to North Adams, and he attended city schools including Drury High School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater of operations, participating in campaigns in Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was discharged as a staff sergeant on Jan. 11, 1946. Mr. Mazza and his brothers established Molly's Bakery on State Street in 1931. After a short time, they moved to Williamstown for about five years. They returned the business to Eagle Street in North Adams, where they operated the bakery until he retired in 1965. He was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church. He was a member of the Sons of Italy and the Northern Berkshire Retired Men's Club. He enjoyed fishing in Canada and traveling to Italy and California. He leaves nieces and nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his three brothers Joseph, Samuel, and Albert Mazza, and two sisters, Rose Canino and Helen Pratt. FUNERAL NOTICE â€' A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Mazza will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday from 9 to 10 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth's Church in care of the funeral home.
