Irene Hawthorne, 104
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Irene Hawthorne, 104, of 41 Windom Terrace died Wednesday,June 10, 2009, at home.
Born in Canada on May 22, 1905, daughter of Orion and Mary Senecal Lavariere, she came to North Adams at age 11 and attended the former Notre Dame School.
In her younger years, Mrs. Hawthorne worked at the former Hoosac Cotton Mill and later at the former Sprague Electric Co. She was primarily a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
She was a communicant of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church and a member of its Rosary Society. She was a member of the former Houghton Round Table and the Sprague Retirees. She enjoyed oil painting and painted many area landscapes. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and gardening.
Her husband, Daniel J. Hawthorne, died on July 23, 1966.
She leaves a son, J. Shaun Hawthorne and his wife, Barbara, of Chandler, Ariz.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews including Richard Lavariere, grandnieces, grandnephews and her special friend Eileen Frey.
A daughter, Joan B. Hawthorne, and another son, Daniel J. Hawthorne Jr., are deceased. She was also predeceased by her brothers and a sister, Walter Lavariere, Herve Lavariere, Remi Lavariere and Yvonne Lavariere.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Memorial Mass for Mrs. Hawthorne will be celebrated Tuesday, June 16, at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
