Robert J. Lamore, 86

STAMFORD, Vt. — Robert J. Lamore, 86, of 355 Main Road died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his home with family members by his side. Born in Brockton, Mass., on May 15, 1922, son of Leo J. and Emily Fournier Lamore, he attended local schools and was a 1942 graduate of Drury High School in North Adams, Mass., where he was Western Mass. pole vaulting champion in his senior year. A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served as a tank radio operator with the 4th Marine Division on the islands of Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Silver Star for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" in the action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan on June 15, 1944. According to his commendation, "As a member of a tank platoon landing under fire, Private First Class Lamore voluntarily and with utter disregard of personal safety, walked out onto the reef while under heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire three different times and guided tanks of his platoon safely ashore." Mr. Lamore established B & B Decorating Co. with William O'Grady and later retired from the former Quinn's Wallpaper and Paint store in North Adams. He first worked at the former Sprague Electric Co. and at Hunter Machine Co., both in North Adams, for many years. He was a member of Stamford Community Church and North Adams American Legion Post 125. He loved playing piano and chess. He had a private pilot's license, enjoyed people and always had a new joke to share. A grandson, Jeffrey Lamore, and a brother, Richard Lamore, both predeceased him. He leaves his wife of 51 years, the former Beverly Dodge; two sons, Robert W. Lamore and his wife, Cynthia, and Scott L. Lamore, all of Stamford; a daughter, Martha Lamore Beliveau and her husband, Donald Jr., of Adams, Mass.; a brother, Leo J. Lamore Jr. and his wife, Jean, of North Adams; a sister, Verna Cribari and her husband, William, of Pittsfield, Mass.; grandsons Brodie and Tucker Beliveau; granddaughters Karlie Beliveau and Jessica Bugbee and her husband, David; great-grandchildren Matthew and Jacob Bugbee and Izabella Lamore, and several nieces and nephews. FUNERAL NOTICE — A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at Stamford Community Church on Main Road by the Rev. William R. Wilson Jr. Burial will be in the spring in Millard Cemetery in Stamford. Memorial donations may be made to Stamford Community Church, 1059 Main Road, Stamford, VT 05352 or Stamford Fire Department, 142 Stebbins Lane, Stamford, VT 05352. The family has entrusted the arrangements to Auge-San Souncie-Simmons Funeral Home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, Mass.
