Sgt. Dennis D. Kuzia, 66
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Retired North Adams Police Sgt. Dennis Dominick Kuzia, 66, of 77 Natural Bridge Road died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Sgt. Kuzia served the city for 29 years, retiring as acting captain in 1995.Born in North Adams on Nov. 30, 1942, son of Dominick and Orella Champaney Kuzia, he attended schools in Adams and North Adams and graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School in 1961.
A Navy veteran, he served during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Sgt. Kuzia graduated from the Massachusetts Police Academy and obtained his associate's degree in criminal justice in 1972 from Berkshire Community College with honors and his bachelor of science degree in criminal law from Westfield State College in 1978.
After his retirement, he served on the North Adams Traffic Commission and worked for Guard Plus Security.
He was a licensed real estate broker. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in North Adams.
He and his wife, the former Carolyn Skorupski, were married April 27, 1963, in the former St. Francis Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Dawn Grady and her husband, Robert, of Land O'Lakes, Fla.; three sons, Todd Kuzia of West Virginia, Dennis A. Kuzia of North Adams and Judd Kuzia of North Adams; two brothers, Richard Kuzia of Great Barrington and Kenneth Kuzia of North Adams; five grandchildren, Megan, Zachary, Tyler and Jaden Kuzia and Ashley Grady.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral Services will take place Monday at 10:15 from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for the charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.
