Mary Ellen Morrissey, age 70, passed away on December 31, 2024, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA.
Born on May 7, 1954, Mary Ellen was known for her tenacious spirit, love of life, and boundless compassion, both as a nurse and an educator. Throughout her life, she was a pillar of strengthand warmth for all who knew her.
Mary Ellen's education began at St. Joe's in North Adams, MA, which was both her primary and secondary school. She went on to achieve a Bachelor's degree from Salem State, a Masters from Russell Sage, and a PhD. in nursing education from Sage Graduate School. Her academic pursuits paved the way for a remarkable career. She was a trauma nurse, administrator, professor, and also shared her extensive knowledge of trauma with medics in the U.S. Army during the Iraq War, focusing on I.E.D. wounds. She regularly contributed test questions that were used on the national nursing exam.
Her personal life was equally rich, marked by her roles as a fiercely loyal friend, a loving mother, and a cherished sibling. She is survived by her son Eamon Stimson and his spouse Edymari De Leon; her siblings and their spouses Mike and Sandra Morrissey, Owen and Christina Morrissey, and Judy and Ernie Bombardier. She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Walter Morrissey and Ruth Mary Morrissey; as well as the love of her life and father of her son, Dr. Boudinot Stimson, Jr.
Mary Ellen was an active member of her community, attending church at St Patrick's and later St. Raphael's in Williamstown. Her passions included downhill and cross-country skiing, speed skating in her younger years, as well as reading and cooking. She deeply loved Christmas. Those who knew her will remember her as a second mother, a mentor, and a friend whose home and heart were always open.
A memorial service to honor Mary Ellen's life will be held at Southview Cemetery in North Adams, MA on Wednesday, January 8th at 11:00 AM. A gathering to follow will be announced at the cemetery.
