Alleson Harrower White

Alleson Harrower was born in Boston on October 4th, 1934 and peacefully passed away December 1, 2024 surrounded by many of her family and their partners.

Alleson was predeceased by Harold F. (Terry) White, her beloved husband of 43 years until his death in 2013. She was mother to Peter Whitney, Duncan Whitney, John Whitney, and Elizabeth Whitney, and stepmother to Bradley White, Diane (White) Fish, Sandra White, and Barbara (White) Carr.

Alleson was grandmother to Ben Carr, Andrew Carr, Adelaide Beeman-White, Crosby Fish, Casey Fish, Nicholas White, Margo Brown, Peter White, Chase Whitney, Alle Whitney, Ryan Whitney, Sara Whitney, Caitlin Whitney, and Mahlon Whitney, along with a growing batch of great grandchildren, and she enjoyed relationships with the family’s many spouses and partners.

After a childhood spent in Canada Alleson’s family relocated to the Boston suburbs where she met her first husband and subsequently had four children. She was a proud graduate of Massachusetts College of Art where she majored in graphic design. After her divorce, she gamely managed single motherhood as an artist, teacher, and reader of many books to her rowdy brood. Meeting and marrying Terry White in 1971 doubled the size of the brood, with the ages of the children remarkably chronologically matched. Alleson and Terry courageously entered the choppy seas of shared parenthood, navigating with the tides, guiding their children safely to adulthood. Done with parenting, they often visited and helped with the grandkids with events like Camp Alle - the annual summer visit where the grandchildren could do arts and crafts and run in the Williamstown woods.

Alleson followed a creative thread throughout all her endeavors. Her clothes were stylish, her homes were impeccable, and she took great comfort in the beauty and order around her. Alleson also encouraged all varieties of artistic pursuits in her children and grandchildren. She was an enduring hostess – frequently found in the kitchen creating great meals for her family and a wide social circle of friends. She was a consummate sender of notes, always written in her familiar slant of varietal colors and would often include clippings that she thought would be of interest to the recipients.

Alleson and Terry were golfers, tennis players and travelers. They enjoyed their friends and family more than anything else and were happiest when surrounded by large groups of family at the holidays. She will be missed by many.

A service in celebration of Alleson’s life will be held at St John’s Episcopal Church, 35 Park St, Williamstown on Sunday, December 15 at 2pm.
