Peter C. French, 88

Peter Curtis French of Stamford, Vermont, and Williamstown, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 10 at age 88. He was born on March 26,1936, in Columbus, Ohio, the elder of two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis French. It may have been the fact that he was raised in a house facing the fairway of the Columbus Country Club that sparked his lifelong passion for golf. An outstanding member of the golf teams at Columbus Academy (class of ’54) and Williams College (class of ’58) he participated in the U.S. Junior Amateur tournaments along with the four-year younger Jack Nicklaus, also from Columbus, who remained a life-long friend. Agile enough to have a stint as a stilt walker in clown costume in the Ringling Brothers Circus, he joined the U.S. Army after college where he trained fellow recruits in the use of the howitzer. Over the years he settled on two special avocations: becoming an instrument rated pilot with a plane he flew until a few years ago and teaching the principals of golf to young and old alike wherever he lived.

For decades was a much loved and respected secondary school teacher, first at Deerfield Academy, then the Pine Cobble School, and later at Greenwich Country Day School. He was a motivating mentor as a school golf and soccer coach to his many admiring students. In addition, and for many years, served as a special guide each summer, driving five or six students west on a tour of America. En route, the group would visit working farms in the Midwest, ranches in Wyoming, and many golf courses along the way. The group fished, motorbiked, golfed, and hiked as they took in sites from the Badlands to the Great Salt Lake. On these tours he was a stickler for manners and always expected his student travelers to dress “in collared shirts” to show respect for the people they visited. His last years were spent in active retirement not only teaching golf and flying his plane, but in tutoring a host of young students in the communities surrounding Williamstown, close to his home in Stamford, Vermont.

He was devoted to his younger brother, Tony, who passed away in 2022, and his generosity and loyalty will be remembered by his many friends and former students.

Funeral services to celebrate the life of Peter French will be held on Saturday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sherman Burbank Chapel, 605 Main Street, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Peter was a kind and enthusiastic man.
I had the pleasure of being in his company at North Adams airport where I befriended many of the pilots there. They took me under their wing as a pilot and we shared a lot of hangar talk and good times. I will miss his companionship as Im sure many others will. He knew how to be a friend.

Peter was a wonderful person-always excited to see you and hear about you. I was a private pilot when I met Peter at North Adams Regional Airport. It was there that I befriended a wonderful group of pilots who took me under their wings so to speak. I was so fond of all of them among which was Peter. He will always be remembered for his kindness and interest in others.

We lower our flags to a true gentleman and educator who made the world a better place. Pete was sharing his love of flying with many young students long before the Young Eagles program was established and he will be missed by many that he tutored to become assets to our society. RIP

Mr. French was practically a member of our family for several years while he tutored my two youngest children. He was the reason they both got into college and did well. I will always remember his stories, his laughter and his kindness. He was such a good man.

Peter was one of the daily visitors at the Harriman-West Airport. That's where we became good friends. I spent countless hours with Pete, along with all the other WW2 vets, listening to their stories and learning many life lessons. I will always appreciate that time I was able to spend with him. Fly high, my friend.

Mr.French was a an invaluable asset to the town and teaching the high school aged kids. He’s the reason I ever figured out Latin and scored well on the SATs. I’ll never forget his love for his airplane and golf. My academic life wouldn’t be the same without him and I’m sure many would say the same.

I’ll never forget laughing to the point of tears when Mr. French would roll up to my house on a motor cycle for our weekly tutoring sessions starting when I was in elementary school. He would always have treats and a welcoming grin for our parade of dogs that nearly knocked him to the ground every time he walked through the door. The man taught me to tell time, is the reason I passed the SATs, and was a delightful and positive presence throughout my childhood. May he rest in peace.

Mr. French was an excellent high school tutor and an incredibly kind man who helped me maintain respectable grades so I could get into college. He changed the trajectory of my life. I will be forever grateful.

I will always have fond memories of Pete at North Adams Airport. He was a kind and thoughtful person with a passion for aviation. He is one of the last local pilots that helped make this airport a special place. He will be missed by many. God Bless you Pete.
