Darlene, Nathan and Natalie:
We were surprised to learn of Matt's passing. Last we knew, he had beaten the cancer and he had much more life to live. We just never know.

Matt worked with us about 22 years and then ten years with the new Williams Inn. He came to us from Glens Falls in answer to our help wanted ad in the Albany paper. He was hired as dining room manager. Over the years he learned to do almost every job in the inn from barkeeping to housekeeping to front desk and pool, even to maintenance, shoveling snow and stringing lights at Christmas. He took down the flags every night and even taught me the correct way to fold them. He became an indispensable part of our managing team.

He met and married Darlene Belanger in a lobby ceremony (dating a co-worker wasn't allowed!). Nathan and Natalie followed soon after. He stayed 22 years and we were lucky to have him. He was a wonderful man so congenial with our guests and making friends with tourists and locals alike. Never thought we would have to say goodbye so soon.

Our thoughts are with you and we plan to see you on Monday at the reception. We were proud to have Matt work for us until we retired, and stay on with the new operators of the Inn for a decade.

Darlene, I just told my mom the sad news. We're so sorry to hear about Matt passing, but understanding the pain of what you and your children are going through right now, it is also comforting knowing that he is at peace. I'm sure Matt and my dad are having a great time together, and that dad had a few wisecrack remarks when he greeted him! I'm grateful that Matt was such a great friend to my dad and that they both shared a love of not only golf, but of the Vikings. My thoughts are with you and your family, but I will leave you with this... another thing my dad and Matt had in common is they had big hearts and just wanted everyone to be happy... so there will signs that he's still there in spirit, to let you know he loves you and is watching it for you. I get messages from dad all the time, and I have a feeling Matt will do the same for you and your children.

In so many ways Matt was the heart and soul of the "behind the scenes" of the Williams Inn. He was so kind and generous with his time and attention. He always made us feel special and appreciated as guests. He emulated the values expressed by the Cheers theme: "Sometimes you wanna go where everyone knows your name..." He is missed.
