Samuel Westcott Jr.
Samuel R. Westcott, Jr, 96, longtime resident of Williamstown and Colonial Village, died on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Samuel was born on April 2, 1928, a son of the late Samuel R and Dorothy (Shaw) Westcott. He attended North Adams School and was a 1946 graduate of Drury High School where he was the captain of the track team. Samuel was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Navy where he obtained the rank of Seaman 1ST. Class leading Seaman. He served six months in Artica.
He also received his Associates degree from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts.
He married Virginia Godfrey in 1950. He was employed at the Genetic Lab at Mount Hope in Williamstown and later as an assistant geneticist at Arbor Acres Farm. He was a talented carpenter and builder having built several of his homes. He was employed at Pfizer Co as a lab technician in Groton, CT. In 1977, he moved back to Williamstown to his family farm, Willowbrook Farm on Sloan Rd. in South Williamstown. He was then employed at Phillips Hardware Store in Williamstown and Agway in Stephentown and Williamstown.
Samuel served as a trustee of the Second Congregation Church in South Williamstown, served on the Board of Directors of the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation, a member of the Williamstown House of Local History, Scout Master for Troop #5 Cubmaster 72, and was a founding member of Berkshire Grown and co-founder of the North Stonington, CT Little League and director of the North Stonington Athletic Association.
Samuel loved the outdoors, where he spent many hours hiking, canoeing and camping. He loved traveling to Maine.
He is survived by his wife Donna (Bona) Westcott who married in August of 1996. He also leaves a daughter, Susan Landry (Peter) of Stamford, VT and two sons; Stephen Westcott (Gloria) of Stephentown, NY and David Westcott (Tammy) of Loudonville, VT. In addition is survived by four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step granddaughters. was predeceased by his first wife Virginia (Godfrey) Westcott who died in 1995, his stepdaughter Bonnie J. Kennedy, and step-granddaughter Jessica Reid.
FUNERAL SERVICE: Private graveside services for Samuel R. Westcott, Jr. will take place on Friday, July 19, 2024 with full Military Honors at Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.
