Richard R. Bush, 90
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Richard Ralph Bush, aged 90, former captain of the North Adams Police Department, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024, at North Adams Commons.
He was born in North Adams, MA, on May 22, 1934, the son of Harold L. and Eva Marie (Tessier) Bush. Richard graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1952, where he actively participated in the baseball and football teams.
A veteran of the Korean War, Richard served in the US Navy aboard the USS Hyman, traveling extensively throughout Europe and distinguishing himself as an accomplished boxer during his service.
After a brief stint at Sprague Electric Co, Richard joined the North Adams Police Department, where he dedicated 30 years of service, rising to the rank of captain. Renowned for his exceptional marksmanship, he earned numerous accolades in police competitions.
A communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Richard found joy in playing golf, achieving the title of two-time club champion at the Taconic Golf Club. He also devoted his time to coaching in the North Adams Youth Football league and later worked part-time at the golfcourse following his retirement. A member of the VFW and the American Legion, Richard cherished the opportunity to support his community.
Above all, Richard treasured his role as a loving grandfather, never missing a chance to cheer on his grandchildren at their games and swim meets.
Survived by two sons, retired North Adams police officer Craig A. Bush of Clarksburg, MA, and Dr. Martin K. (Jennifer) Bush DDS of Adams, MA, Richard also leaves behind his former wife, Marlene Blanchard. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Alex, Alyssa (YiorgosMaravelias), Adam (Claudia Bresett), and Aaron Bush, as well as by his nieces and nephew, Darlene (David) Blanchette, Christine (Alan) Prejsnar, Eric (Diana) Dudek, Tara (Jonathan) Goldberg, Shealee (Sal) Nigro and Lindsay (Dustin) Frisk. He was predeceased by his brother, Harold Bush.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial in memory of Richard Bush will take place on Monday, June 17, 2024, at 9:00 AM at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, followed by burial at Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA, on Sunday from 2-4 PM.
