Dorothy Gilman, 99

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Dorothy Jane (Bryson) Gilman of North Adams passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at the remarkable age of 99. She departed peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family after living a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished family moments.Dorothy was born in North Adams on October 12, 1924, a daughter of the late James & Elizabeth (O’Connell) Bryson. She was preceded in death by her brother James Bryson, Jr. and sister Virginia Scully.

She was a proud alumna of Drury High School. Dorothy dedicated many years of her life to the North Adams School System, where she made a significant impact in the Special Education Department. Her commitment to the well-being and education of others was truly commendable.

After her tenure in North Adams, Dorothy ventured to Los Angeles, California, where she continued her passion for special education. Her dedication knew no bounds, and she played an instrumental role in the local school system, receiving a certificate of merit for her exceptional work.

Dorothy had many enjoyable years of retirement together with her husband Norbert Gilman in The Villages of Lady Lake, FL before his passing on June 17, 1996. Their enduring love story began on August 8, 1947 when they exchanged vows and embarked on a journey that spanned over five decades.

Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of love and a family that adored her. She is survived by her seven children: Judith Nesman of West Springfield, MA, Russell Gilman (Susan) of North Adams, Margery Therrien (Steven) of Clifton Park, NY, Richard Gilman of Plymouth, MA, Gary Gilman (Emory) of Troutdale, OR, Donald Gilman (Terese) of Simi Valley, CA, and William Gilman (Kelley) of Sandy, OR.

Dorothy was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a cherished grandmother to 16 grandchildren: Dawn Connors, Chris Nesman, Melissa Fitzgibbons, Trevor Gilman, Mark Gilman, Rebecca Gilman, Kurt Therrien, Stacey Passarell, Jennifer Fairchild, Cari Kowalski, Kelly Braun, Michael Gilman, Sarah Lewis, Melissa Gilman, Kristin Holzner, and Daniel Gabbard. Her family continued to grow with the joy of 31 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind 16 nieces and nephews.

Dorothy had a love of gardening and following her favorite Boston sports teams. She showcased her creativity through self-taught talents in knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Whether gathered around the family dinner table or engaged in the creative pursuits she so adored, Dorothy's laughter was a constant reminder of the light-hearted and joyful spirit that defined her. Her laughter was not just a sound; it was a legacy, a reflection of the enduring happiness she brought to the lives of those around her.

A memorial graveside service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held in the Spring at Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army and the Northern Berkshire Food Bank in Dorothy's honor. My heartfelt condolences to all of you on your mom’s passing. I have so many fond memories of days spent at the house filled with the Gilman kids and their many friends who were always welcomed in after playing at Noel field.
