Robert D. Waltermire, 87

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  It is with profound sadness that we announce that Robert D Waltermire of North Adams passed away on December 19, 2023. Like everything Bob did in his life, he passed on his own terms. Bob was born on October 7, 1936 to Rowlinson and Leola (Dellert) Waltermire in Pittsfield. He attended schools in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School in the class of 1955. After graduation, Bob entered the United States Marine Corp and proudly served as a musician until his Honorable discharge in early 1958 at the rank of Corporal. He attended and graduated from Berkshire Business College in 1960.

Bob travelled the world for many years assembling machines for the former James Hunter Machine Company before launching his own consulting business in the textile machinery industry. He was briefly employed at Kimberly Clark/Schweitzer Mauduit in Lee before retiring. After his retirement, Bob kept himself busy by working as the Maintenance Manager at the Berkshire Mill Apartments in Adams into his early 80s.

Bob was a friend of Bill W for forty-five years. For more than fifty-five years, Bob was member of Unity Lodge Number 89 Jacksonville VT and Lafayette-Greylock Lodge North Adams where he was a Past Master. He was member of Naomi Chapter 17 Order of the Eastern Star for fifty years. Bob also was a fifty plus year member of Melha Shriners where he participated in events and parade with the Hadji, Drum Corp, Military Band, German Band, Riders, Legion of Honor, Ambassador Emeritus, and past President of the Berkshire Shrine Club. He was a past Director of Court 144 of the Royal Order of Jesters. Bob was a very proud, longtime member of the Eagles Band in Pittsfield.

Bob is survived by his wife of sixty-five years Nancy A (Davis) Waltermire whom he married on December 13, 1958. He also survived by his five children; Myra Wilk (Bud Green) of Adams, Martha Storey of Royal Palm Beach FL, James (Lisa) Waltermire of Adams, David (Lynn) Waltermire of Adams, and Karl Waltermire of North Adams. Bob leaves behind his eight grandchildren; Kathryn (Corey) Gillis and John (Ann Scott) Wilk, Nicholas (Sarah) Waltermire and Celia (Brad) Botto, Jenna Waltermire and Mathew Waltermire, Joseph Storey, and Caroline Waltermire. Bob was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Connor Gillis and Ayden Waltermire. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law Carol A (Francis) Morandi of North Adams, his nephew Francis (Rachel) Morandi of Bellingham, and his great niece Elizabeth Morandi. He was pre-deceased by his son-in-law Thomas Storey.

The Waltermire family would like extend a thank you to the Doctors, Nurses, and staff at Berkshire Medical Center Two East and Four West, VA Medical Center Pittsfield and HospiceCare in the Berkshires for the excellent care, compassion, and support they showed our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and the entire family through Bob’s last days.

At Bob’s request, there will be no calling hours just a private service. Bob did request that all donations be made to the Shriner’s Hospital New England or HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA 01247. The Waltermire Family,
I was saddened to read of Bob's passing. I first met Bob when I worked at the Viet Nam Veterans ice skating rink in North Adams. There, Bob along with his wife Nancy, ran a skate rental business. Throughout the many years that followed, I would run into Bob and Nancy and we would chat. Both of them were always cordial to me. May Bob find eternal rest in the Lords' gentle and caring arms. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Waltermire Family
