Mary "Pat" Markland, 91

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Mary “Pat” Bourdon Markland, R.N. went to be with Our Lord on Saturday, December 9, 2023 with her loving family by her side.

Pat is survived by her five children; Steve (wife Reen), Beth Cimonetti (husband Lonny), Donna Neville (husband Matt), Fred (wife Molly), Paul (wife Barbara), and her brother in-law Donald (wife Dodie). She delighted in her 13 grandchildren; Evan, Scott, Sean, Elise, Leanne, Chase, Liz, Nick, Justin, Kristin, Aron, Andy and Adam as well as 18 great-grandchildren; Avery, Leah, Harper, Dawson, Isaac, Kobe, Nathan, Blake, Jordan, Amaya, Peyton, Colton, Carson, Jackson, Julia, James, Hayden and Kinsley, along with nieces and nephews Carol, Gayle and Bob and several cousins.

Pat was born in North Adams, MA on June 7, 1932, the daughter of the late Mary Hickey Bourdon. She graduated from St Joseph's High School in 1950 and then graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield Massachusetts in June 1953. While she was an accomplished nursing professional, her most cherished roles were that of a loving wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She was affectionately known as Mina to so many.

She married the love of her life, Ed Markland, on January 8, 1955 at St. Francis Church. Ed and Pat shared 68 amazing years together until Ed preceded her in death on August 10, 2023.

Pat was first employed by North Adams Regional Hospital and then was the Industrial Nurse at the former Sprague Electric company. She was later employed by Adams Nursing Home as a nursing supervisor. She became the Drury High School Nurse in 1975 and in 1981 was appointed the role of Health Services Administrator for the North Adams School Department until her retirement in 1993.

She was an avid New England sports fan, in addition to being the biggest cheerleader for all her family, no matter what they chose to become involved in. Pat was a true matriarch, openly sharing unconditional love and unlimited “Mina hugs” to those around her. Mina will always be remembered as sitting at the head of the table surrounded by family and friends sharing memories and insight with candor that always concluded with “you know I love you”.

The family wants to extend our special thanks to Deacon Bruce Ziter for bringing Holy Communion to our mom and most especially for his friendship over the years. Thank you to North Adams Dialysis Center for the special care they provided over the past 3 years. Thanks also to the staff at North Adams Commons for the compassionate care they provided in her final days.

Calling hours will be at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, North Adams on Wednesday, 12/13/23 from 9:00 to 11:00 am with a Funeral Mass to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to PopCares or St. Vincent de Paul Society in care of DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA 01247.
