Jeanette F. Ameen, 99
CHESHIRE, Mass. —Jeanette Farris Ameen of Cheshire passed away peacefully on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. She was born in North Adams on October 26, 1924, the daughter of the late Kassim and Margaret Ameen. She attended schools in North Adams and was a graduate of Drury High School.
Jeanette was a dedicated telephone operator for New England Telephone and later for AT & T, until she retired with 39 years of service. She was a member of the American Druze Society, the First Baptist Church of North Adams, Naomi Chapter 17 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Telephone Pioneers Club. Jeanette loved to travel and was able to visit many wonderful places including the country of Lebanon – the birthplace of her father. She also traveled to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, spent many winters in Florida and in her later years some time on Cape Cod.
Jeanette enjoyed reminiscing about her younger years growing up on Center Street in North Adams, sharing many interesting and descriptive stories about her childhood and all the family and friends that visited them from the “Old Country”. Her memories of the past were impeccable.
She leaves behind three sisters: Nazeerah Sookey of Adams, Maneera Ameen of Cheshire and Christine Maher of Williamstown; one brother, Edward Ameen and his wife, Barbara of Cheshire, and a sister-in-law Mary Ameen of Pittsfield. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, whom she adored tremendously. She was predeceased by 2 sisters: Dorothy Ali (Isa) and Julia Haddad (Mike) and two brothers, Fuad Ameen and Richard (Mary Beth) Ameen, as well as brothers-in-law David I. Sookey and Dr. Galeb Maher.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to Northern Berkshire EMS, PO Box 1045, North Adams, MA 01247.
