George Craig Coons, 89
LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — George Craig Coons, 89, of 60 Narragansett Avenue, Lanesborough, MA, passed away on November 12, 2023, at the Williamstown Commons. He was born to George H. Coons and Emma Gertrude (Jones) Coons, on June 24, 1934. G. Craig was a dedicated husband, having been committed to his wife of 68 years, Mary Louise (Middlebrook) Coons. He served and supported several churches in Lanesborough and Pittsfield.
In terms of education, G. Craig attended Broad Brook Elementary School and Williamstown High School in Williamstown, MA. He also attended Wentworth Institute in Boston where he earned an Associate’s degree in Electrical Design and Drafting.
G. Craig served in the Army Reserves from 1957 to 1965. During his time in the Reserves, he had a successful business career. He worked at General Electric Power Transformer and Ordinance Systems from 1955 to 1972. He then worked at M & W Heating as an Expediter from 1972 to 1977 before becoming an owner of M & W Heating from 1977 until his retirement in 1993.
G. Craig was an active member of the Federated Church of Lanesborough, Grace Congregational Church and Evangelical Free Church of Pittsfield. He enjoyed traveling and working on his home in Lanesborough and his cottage on Pontoosuc Lake. G. Craig was also an active steward and contributed to the various churches he served.
G. Craig is survived by his loving wife, Mary Louise, and their children: Craig A. Coons and companion Ms. Judy DeGere, Peter D. Coons and his wife Debora, Michael S. Coons and his wife Judy, and Timothy R. Coons and his fiancé Therese Slater. He was the proud grandfather to Sara Coons Gorevan and her son Justin J. Gorevan, Nathan S. Coons and his wife Shayna Walker, Pamela R. Coons and her fiancé Anthony Mazza III, and their son Dominic Allen Mazza. Grandfather to Johanna Beguin and her children Finley, Anna, and Ella Beguin. Grandfather to Heather Foland and her husband Thomas, and their children William and Hunter Foland. Grandfather to Benjamin L. Coons. Grandfather to Christopher Coons and his wife Kara, Jayme Demary and her husband Corey and their children Walker, Easton and Beckett Demary. And Grandfather to Timothy J. Coons and Thomas J. Slater. He is also survived by his sister Paula J. Murphy, of Bennington, VT.
Along with his parents, G. Craig was predeceased by his sister Lois Anne Ware and great-grandson Beckett Michael Gorevan.
A memorial service for George Craig Coons will be held at the Community Bible Church on 160 Bridges Road in Williamstown on Thursday November 16, 2023 at 1:00 PM.
