George J. Trottier, 83

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  George J. Trottier, age 83, a self-taught meteorologist who brought warmth and insight to the hearts of many, passed on October 8 at North Adams Commons. George was born in North Adams on October 13, 1939, son of Rose Eva (St. Denis) Trottier Dean and Andrew Trottier. He is survived by his brother, Robert Trottier of Pittsfield and nieces, Alicia Trottier and her daughter, Dominique of Pittsfield; Michelle Powell of Tampa, FL; and Christine Trottier of Hartford, CT and nephew, Robert Trottier of Jacksonville, FL.

George embarked on a career in radio in 1969, serving as the on-air broadcast meteorologist for WMNB in North Adams, and later for WMNB's successor, WNAW. Despite being legally blind, he provided his invaluable forecasts and demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to his craft.

Throughout his more than 35 years as a meteorologist, George became a beloved and trusted figure in the community. His distinctive bass voice was instantly recognizable, and his forecasts were not only accurate, but George possessed a unique ability to make the complexities of weather accessible to all his listeners.

When the parent company of WMNB, Berkshire Broadcasting Co., was sold to the VOX Radio Group, George and several other on-air personalities were let go as part of cost-cutting measures. However, with the public outcry and the added pressure exerted by then North Adams Mayor John Barrett, VOX Radio Group rehired George, at a significant increase in pay, ensuring that his passion for meteorology continued to shine.

Beyond his meteorological pursuits, George had a love for connecting with others. He enjoyed engaging with friends on CB radio during his earlier years, forming lasting friendships. Music was another one of his passions, and he created several tapes filled with his favorite tunes over the years.

A graveside service for George will be held at the family lot at Southview Cemetery in North Adams on Thursday October 12, 2023 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPEL, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA 01247.
