John J. Armata, 71

ADAMS, Mass. —

Mr. John J. Armata, 71, of Sackets Harbor, NY, a native of Adams, died Thursday August 24, 2023 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY.

He was born in Adams on April 15, 1952, a son of the late Bernard and Josephine (Kieltyka) Armata. John attended Adams schools, graduating from the former Adams Memorial High School in 1970, and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

John began his career in physical education at Mount Greylock Regional High School and later at Monument Mountain High School. A lifelong animal lover, he went on to spend many years as a farrier and animal behaviorist in the region, helping dogs and their people live happily together. He was also an accomplished musician and song writer whose love of music began at a very early age, and never left him. He enjoyed reading, swimming, fishing, and spending time with his son as often as he could.

John is survived by his son, Matthew Armata and his wife Sarah of Peru, MA; two grandchildren, Colton and Brynlee; a brother, Bernard Armata and his wife Barbara of Esperance, NY; three sisters, Katherine Caffrey and her husband, Jim of Dalton; Dorothy Daniels and her husband, Dan of Parsonsburg, MD and Laurie Armata of Adams, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on a later date to be announced at the discretion of the family, and any memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the Berkshire Humane Society, 214 Barker Rd. Pittsfield, MA 01201.
