Alan G. Romano, 77

Alan Gordon Romano
May 13, 1946-July 20, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Al Romano at the age of 78 on July 20, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease and a brief illness. Al was surrounded by his loving wife Nancy, his son Chadwick and his daughter in law Heather as he entered into eternal life with God. Al never threw in the towel in the ring or in his fight to live.

The "Pride of the Berkshires" was born in Adams, Massachusetts on May 13, 1946 to Joseph and Marie (Simon) Romano. Al was an avid fisherman and a lifelong fan of the Atlanta Braves, especially Greg Maddux. Al had a long and very successful boxing career and was voted into the Berkshire County Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017. Al was rated 26th in the Eagles top 50. Al was also the North American Welterweight Champion before Sugar Ray Leonard took over the title. Al served as a North Adams Police Officer for many years before retiring due to an injury he sustained on the job.

Some of Al's fondest memories were the times he spent fishing on the Salmon River with his with his best friend and former partner on the force Bill Davis. Al could often be seen enjoying one of his favorite cigars.

Al is survived by his loving wife and partner of 55 years Nancy, his son Alan Romano and wife Gill of Lenoxdale, his son Daniel Romano, and his son Chadwick Walker and his wife Heather of North Adams. Al is also survived by his four grandchildren Zachary of Hartford, Connecticut, Brent of Bennington, Vermont, Colin of Statesboro, Georgia and his beloved Reagan of North Adams. Al is also survived by his sister Maureen Montague of North Carolina. Al was pre deceased by his brother Doug and his niece Tanya. Al is also survived by his two best friends Bill Davis and Freddy Thompson.

Al will surely be missed by many. A celebration of life will be held for Al at 107 Beaver Street in North Adams on August 6th from 1pm-5pm. All are welcome to attend. To add to the Book of Memories, please visit flynndagnolifuneralhomes.com.

To all members of Al's family, my mother (Nancy Walsh) told me about Al's passing. I was extremely saddened to hear this news. I remember Al, because he and my father, Franny Walsh were friends for years. And one thing I will never, ever forget was the beautiful eulogy he gave for my father when he passed away in 1999. It was such a wonderful tribute to my dad and later was printed in the paper under letters to the editor, a friend remembers Fran Walsh. His words said everything he thought and felt about my dad, and they were moving, sincere and loving. So I would like to say now to Al's family, what a wonderful human being he was also. May you find comfort and peace in this difficult time. And lastly, I'd like to think my father and Al are together again??????

Nancy and Family, It was saddening to learn of Al's passing recently. It has been quite some time since speaking with Al, but each time happening, it was enjoyable to recount history. Al was a "man's man, " and always helpful and respectful!
Another one of the good guy's leaving too early.
