Michael A. Deep, 73

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Michael Anthony Deep, 73 of North Adams died on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield. Mike loved life and fought hard to the very end.

He was born in North Adams on July 21, 1949, a son of Tony Michael Deep and Anna Barbara (Handy) Deep. He graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School with the class of 1967 and from North Adams State College in 1973 with a bachelor of art in history.

Mike was a licensed insurance and real estate agent and founded Deep Associates Insurance Agency Inc. In 2013, he fulfilled his life-long dream of owning a golf course and poured his heart and soul into operating Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown, with visions of someday building a destination resort.

He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Mike was a former North Adams city councilor and was the president of the North Adams Lions Club. He was a member of the National Golf Course Owners Association and the Massachusetts Manufactured Housing Association. Mike enjoyed watching Williams College football and basketball and was an avid member of their booster clubs. He was a longtime member of the Northern Berkshire YMCA, where he enjoyed playing racquetball or swimming with friends. He was especially kind to the youth of the community with hopes of being an inspiration to their future successes.

Survivors include his sister, Ellen L. (Craig) Millard of North Adams, who worked with Mike from the very beginning of his career, and remained by his side throughout his long-fought battle these past months. He also leaves his niece and nephew Carrie Ann (Terry) Kondel of Adams and Bryan Anthony Millard of North Adams, both of whom he adored. He also leaves his beloved great-nieces and great-nephews Kamilia, Kale, Lilly and Jake, and his longtime friend Victoria Richardello of Adams. He was predeceased by his sister, Philomena "Phyllis" Deep on July 16, 1994.

Mike held his family, friends, employees, and customers in the highest regard and will be greatly missed by all.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mike Deep will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church; the Michael Deep Memorial Scholarship Fund or the charity of the donor's choice in care of the funeral home. I am sorry for your loss. Mike was a very tough cookie. I always known Mike to stand up for what he believed in...and chuckled when I knew he was caught...along side of him... May he rest in peace. I hope the family is doing well at this difficult time.

\Ellen. As a small child in the neighborhood, I remember both you and Mike working at the store for your parents and Mike playing baseball with the others in the A&P parking lot. Your parents loved, appreciated, and were so proud to you both. I am shocked and saddened by Mike's passing. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time as Mike joins with your parents and sister in heaven.

Very surprised and saddened to see that Mike is gone. Going back to the days when he and I played on a team in the YMCA Basketball League, I've always been an admirer of him.

He was always very generous when I would hit him up for a donation to the youth hockey league or any other charitable organization.

He's truly a guy that will be missed.

Mike was one of a kind and I always enjoyed working on projects with him. I could always count on Mike to irritate some overzealous public official or inspector and often enjoyed the sideshow provided..
His free spirit attitude will be missed by all.
from: The Moody Familyon: 08-23-2022

Condolences to everyone who Mike touched in his life. I'm a little late to the party to write a note here but it's been very enjoyable reading the memories of everyone who has commented. Mike was truly one of the greatest supporters and contributors to the development of youth in all of our communities. He devoted his time and spent his own money in every commitment to coach, sponsor teams and encourage kids to be better and better and develop pride. And sportsmanship. He was a good friend and joyful participant in so many many other endeavors and faced challenges in each.

He was always looking for his next adventure which led him to purchase Waubeeka golf course. which, beyond his exciting tramway project from North Adams to the summit if Mount Greylock, was perhaps one of his greatest business challenges. Approximately one year after he bought the golf course, I visited him and brought him a golf hat from Waubeeka circa 1971 when I okayed there in high school. Mike was thrilled with the memento and I asked him: "having a year of ownership under his belt, would he buy the golf course again?" "Not on your life" he proclaimed. It was a hilarious moment. He ultimately loved the business and the course more and more. And hosted many generous benefits there.

And, as a gentleman, he followed the hellacious path that Williamstown and some of its haughtier residents put him through in his dream of adding a small inn to add to the appeal of his beautiful golf course. He held his head high In public at an embarrassing town meeting event as the town squashed that dream saying "we have more than enough hotel rooms." And then, within a year two new hotels broke ground. He was more gracious than he had to be in that public defeat.

Just a good, good guy with solid intentions and aspirations ever since he was able to make a difference.
from: Bruce Whitneyon: 08-23-2022

Our sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to Mike’s family and all those whose lives he touched. My association with Mike came through our shared love of Waubeeka Golf Links. We spent hours discussing the golf course history in preparation for its 50th anniversary. It was a joy to have this bond with Mike, he was truly passionate about golf and the golf course. And most of all I enjoyed our friendship borne out of this shared love.

I first met Mike when I was in the fourth grade and played basketball in the St Francis Youth Basketball League…. Mike served as League Director for five years and displayed an contagious enthusiasm that reflected in the kids who played in the league.
His devotion as an organizer and fund raiser were top notch.
He expanded the league to include a post-season tournament that attracted travel teams from Berkshire County, Vermont, Franklin County, Springfield and beyond.
He never forgot the kids who had the privilege to play in the league. His personal success never made him unreachable
I will miss my friend
