Jennifer Fenander, 53

HANCOCK, Mass. — Jennifer Fenander died at home in Hancock on Dec. 9, 2021, after a five-year struggle with ovarian cancer.

Born Jan. 19, 1968, in Pittsfield to Elliot and Margaret Flaccus Fenander, she is survived by her parents, her son, Evan, and her sisters Sara Fenander of Scarborough, England, Amy Fenander Garcia (Miguel) of Paris, France, and Rebecca Fenander of Tamworth, N.H.

A graduate of Pine Cobble School in Williamstown, Westtown Friends School in West Chester, Pa., and Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, Jenna brought her artistic vision to everything she did. A baker of bread, a gardener, an avid cook, and a skilled spinner and knitter, she also enjoyed the challenge of repairing and painting old dwellings. She loved sharing her knowledge with others.

Jenna endured her illness with amazing strength and fortitude. She died peacefully with her family near. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Research for Ovarian Cancer at OCRA.org, or one might give Jenna joy by planting a tree in her memory.

Oh my heart aches - Jenna, was friend to me while we were at Westtown. I thought of her so often, thinking of her raising her son, baking bread and adding her artistic touch to the world. I admired her tenacity for life and for having fun - she was a needed beam of light for me and I was so grateful for her kindness and friendship. She will live on in my memory.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Fenander, Sara, Amy, Becca, and Evan: My heart goes out to all of you and I am so very sad with the loss of Jenna. I remember her fondly playing field hockey at Pine Cobble, and skiing at Jimmy Peak - she was such an elegant skier, - like all her sisters! And she was in the theatre too... Years later I remember talking with Jenna about baking bread, - she was so very gifted, and clearly had a creative spirit! My thoughts are with all of you as you morn. I send prayers and love to you, and strength to all. xo Dot

I was shocked and saddened upon hearing of Jenna's passing. I knew her and her family for many years - dinners at her home and later working with her sisters at Pine Cobble School.
She also worked with me in dramatics. Such a fine, talented and kind young lady. She will be missed by all who have come in contact with her. Though she is gone, she will forever remain in my heart!

My memories of Jenna will be of her strength and determination While dealing with cancer, I can still see her up on a tall ladder scrapping and painting the outside of her house to perfection. She pushed through group walks after returning from the hospital the previous day. She had a great love for lost cemeteries in our town and without a doubt found all of them. She and her son Evan spent time discovering hiking trails and the love of nature. She will be missed. She was a trooper!

I love that sweater, and am so glad to know the story of the spinning of the yarn, and then dying it with black walnuts, all the different mordants she used, to get the different colors. Just beautiful, like her. I miss her so much already! ***. Although I had long been unable to eat bread with gluten, when Jenna and I became friends, I have heard from so many, about how much they looked forward to eating the breads she baked, how nourished they were, by her work as a baker. She is missed! Gracious, it is hard to believe she is gone. I'm so glad I got to know you as long as I did, Miz Amazing Jenna! Much love to all.
