Support Barack Obama01-30-2008
Today, Sen. John Edwards ended his valiant fight for the presidency of the United States.
As one of the many state officials who had embraced the senator's message, I am saddened to see him leave the race. I feel very strongly that John Edwards' message of taking the power away from Washington lobbyists, providing a national health-care program for our citizens and a laser-beamlike focus on helping the poor and middle class is not only a message that resonated with voters, but with the other candidates in the race.
But now this campaign continues; and like many of you, I, too, have wrestled with the question of which candidate to support going forward. Both candidates on the Democratic side are outstanding public officials who have much to offer our nation. Frankly speaking, either one would be, in my humble estimation, a vast and welcome improvement over the current occupant of the White House.
The country is demanding change. As our nation continues to be engaged in a war seemingly without an end, our standing both economically and morally has been severely damaged.
As I struggled over who I should now support and weighed carefully the record, I came to the conclusion that only a strong and dynamic agent of change could possibly right again our ship of state. Only a leader who can motivate the people to unite, and who appeals to voters on both sides of the political line will ultimately prevail in November and as our next president.
This is why I have made the decision to support Sen. Barack Obama's candidacy for the democratic nomination and I will be joining with Sens. Kerry and Kennedy, Gov. Patrick, many other legislators, not only in Massachusetts, but all over the United States who support change. As I will be fully committed to Sen. Obama's campaign and working hard for his nomination, I will work just as hard for Sen. Clinton's election if she is chosen as the Democratic nominee.
If you too were supporting Sen. Edwards for president, I strongly encourage you to join me in my support of Sen. Barack Obama.
Thank you,
Rep. Denis E. Guyer, D-Dalton
