As a resident, former city official and past patient at North Adams Regional Hospital, I would like to lend my support to the nurses at NARH in their effort to reach a fair contract agreement with hospital officials.
One of the biggest obstacles concerns the elimination of the existing pension system for some workers. In recent years, we have seen more and more employers tampering with the traditional pension systems. In many cases, these types of efforts are counterproductive, unpredictable and dangerous to the future of American workers.
It is obvious that NARH is having financial difficulties but it is also obvious that contract problems can be resolved in an acceptable manner by both parties.
Berkshire County people realize the health and financial importance of our hospital. A hospital whose staff, doctors and administration display professionalism, dedication and concern for patients and community.
It is crucial that contract negotiations continue and an agreement is reached. Otherwise a cloud of uncertainty and public concern will remain.
Northern Berkshire needs its hospital and can ill afford to be injured by existing uncertainties. Time to find a workable prescription for the growing wounds that are infecting our community. Time to heal!
