Charter School Support03-14-2007
As a parent of two students currently enrolled in BaRT, and a teaching assistant employed at Conte Middle School, I am very happy with the education my kids are receiving and very unhappy with the current situation at Conte. I specifically sent my kids to BaRT because I know how bad Conte is. I have worked there for several years now and it gets worse every year. There is no leadership, no direction and no confidence in the current administration.
While Mayor Barrett talks about how much money the school system loses to Bart he should be more concerned about the number of teachers that have been taking early retirement or just plain leaving Conte!
Yes, there are indeed awesome teachers still there, but not enough. I’ve watched too many seasoned professionals leave because their voices were not being heard. They all saw the writing on the wall and realized that the school was, and still is, headed in the wrong direction. Without proper and qualified leadership, the ship sinks.
BaRT offers such varied programs and learning situations that Conte never would offer. The teacher’s at BaRT are more than willing to work with each child’s issues and, while some teacher’s at Conte have said they don’t get concerned about a students home life, BaRT absolutely does! They teach the whole child…not just a subject! I have been very satisfied with the efforts of both my children, and the staff and administration at BaRT.
I may not have a Masters degree, but I know a good teacher when I see one! I wish parents would get involved on a more frequent basis with their child’s education, and realize that just because someone works for the school system, they don’t automatically know how to teach!
Mayor Barrett should open his eyes and his ears to the crisis facing this current administration and realize that it needs help…NOW! Only then will such a great exodus to other schools cease. I know my kids will never attend Conte.
Mayor Barrett is understandably concerned about the budget, but he should be equally concerned about the reason’s for the decisions all those parents made for their children. We can’t all be wrong! We all saw the writing on the wall ourselves and opted for the choice that suited our children. It’s not our fault the “normal†schools couldn’t offer what we wanted for out children: a caring school environment where they could learn at their own pace and in their own styles.
You should talk to other BaRT parents and find out why we made the choices we did. It will open your eyes!
