C. Manning Davis, 88, of Granite Hill Estates, Hallowell, Maine, formerly of Stockbridge, died Thursday at Maine General Hospital in Portland of complications from Parkinson's disease. Born in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 6, 1915, son of John Daniels Davis Sr. and Ella Myers Davis, he attended schools in Greenville, Miss., and graduated from Mississippi College. He earned his master's degree from Tulane University. He attended Cornell University and received his doctorate in chemistry in 1952 from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Davis was employed by International Nickel Co. as a research chemist in the field of ferrous metals, and was instrumental in the development of the X-ray spectrograph. In 1950, he became the founding president of the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (PittCon), an international technical conference and exposition. While in Stockbridge, he enjoyed refurbishing his 1830s-era home and volunteering at the local tourism bureau. He enjoyed woodworking, bridge, photography, hiking, fishing and camping. An Eagle Scout, he volunteered as an adult with the Boy Scouts in many capacities for more than 25 years. He and his wife, the former Irene Agnes Kovacs, whom he met in Pittsburgh, recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Christine Heckman of Monmouth, and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of the life of C. Manning Davis, who died Feb. 26, 2004, will be held today, March 1, at Granite Hill Estates at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th St., New York, NY 10032. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John Daniel Davis Jr., and his sister, Marion Davis Baldwin. He also leaves his son-in-law, David Heckman, and three grandchildren, Kevin Heckman of Chicago, Jennifer Heckman of Arlington, Mass., and Melissa Heckman of Portland, Maine, and many nephews and nieces. He loved children, especially his grandchildren, and would often entertain them with his magic tricks.
