Pittsfield – Mayor James M. Ruberto today announced that the Dancer II public art sculpture that went missing from Park Square in downtown Pittsfield last week has been found in Saratoga, New York near Fish Creek.
City police received an anonymous tip early this morning alerting the them to the location of the sculpture. Police contacted the New York State Police and troopers arrived at the location and identified the sculpture and now have it safely in their possession.
Ruberto thanked city police and the New York State Police for their good work, and commended members of the media and the public who helped get the word out about the missing sculpture.
Testament To The Region
“This is a testament to how our community, and really the entire region, values culture and public art,†said Ruberto. “While it was disappointing that this wonderful sculpture was stolen in the first place, it is reassuring that we collectively worked to bring it back where it belongs.â€
Initial descriptions of the recovered sculpture indicate that it is in good condition. City officials are cooperating with New York State Police with the investigation. The Dancer II will remain with the New York State Police to allow for further examination of the sculpture for finger prints and other clues that may lead to the apprehension of a possible perpetrator.
City officials will pick up the sculpture and deliver it back to Pittsfield as soon as possible.
