Hamil Talman To Speak At Berkshire Museum12:00AM / Monday, March 12, 2007
Pittsfield – Artist Donna Hamil Talman will give a gallery talk at the Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield on Sunday, March 25, at 2 p.m..
Her talk, part of the ongoing series “Art for Lunch,†will focus on her series “Ancestor Portraits,†four of which are currently on view in the exhibition Savage Ancient Seas. Visitors may mingle with the artist over coffee and cookies following her presentation. The program is free with Berkshire Museum admission of $8 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, $5 for children 3-18 (free to members).
Donna Hamil Talman uses photographs of vertebrates from prehistory to the twenty-first century in her work. She manipulates images to float, like embryos, inviting viewers to contemplate the possibilities of transformation. Talman uses the the plastic medium-format Holga camera. Its simple plastic lens creates a soft-and-sharp distortion that corresponds more to the images seen by the human eye. She applies time-intensive processes, including toners and watercolor, and uses selective bleaching on the prints, to age them.
Talman’s “Ancestor Portraits†are on view in Savage Ancient Seas through May 6. The images contain fossils similar to those featured in the exhibition, which features the giant reptiles and aquatic life that swam in the oceans during the Cretaceous period. In addition to Talman’s photographs, the exhibition features the 2004 mural Manifest Destiny by Alexis Rockman and paintings from the Berkshire Museum collection. Savage Ancient Seas is sponsored by TD Banknorth.
The Berkshire Museum is located at 39 South Street on Route 7 in Downtown Pittsfield. The galleries are open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Berkshire Museum at (413) 443-7171, ext. 10, or visit berkshiremuseum.org.
