Accidents Mar Holiday

By Susan Bush
12:00AM / Friday, November 24, 2006

Two separate vehicle accidents left two people with serious injuries, a house with structural damage and interrupted the Thanksgiving holiday for utility workers and emergency services personnel.

21-year-old Christopher Coyne was injured early Nov. 23 when the vehicle he was driving left Middle Pownal Road in Bennington, Vt. and sheared a utility pole then crashed into the foundation of a home.

Numerous homes in the area lost electrical service for several hours. Utility crews from the Central Vermont Power Service and Verizon were at the scene for several hours and restored utility service. The crash occurred at about 1 a.m..

No further information about Coyne's condition was available.
No one was inside the house at the time of the crash.

A 15-year-old youth was taken to Southern Vermont Medical Center with critical injuries on Nov. 23 after a 2005 Honda Rancher all-terrain vehicle he was driving collided with a 1995 Ford F150 pick-up truck.

The accident occurred at 1:04 p.m. at the intersection of Niles School Road and Ladd Brook Road in Pownal, Vt..

Vermont State Police said that the juvenile was traveling eastbound along Ladd Brook Road and attempted to turn north onto Niles School Road when the ATV struck the truck head-on. The juvenile was ejected from the ATV, police said. The juvenile was alone on the ATV and was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

The truck driver, 21-year-old Jeffrey Jennings of Pownal, was not injured, according to police.

The ATV sustained extensive front end damage and the truck sustained moderate damage to its' front end, according to police.

No charges had been filed as of late Nov. 23 and police said the accident is under investigation.
