Pittsfield- The American Cancer Society Relay For Life Committees of Northern and Central/South Berkshire plan to join forces in a candle-lighting ceremony on Park Square in Pittsfield to show support for the Cancer Action Network’s Celebration on the Hill.

As the sun sets on September 20, thousands of luminaria will light the path around the Capitol Reflecting Pool [Washington, D.C.] to remember those lost to cancer, those fighting cancer, and those who have fought cancer and won.

Berkshire region Relay For Life volunteers Donna Briggs and Mary Robert are expected to be in attendance at the Washington D.C. ceremony. Robert was selected as a Central/South Berkshires ambassador and Briggs will represent the Northern Berkshires as an ambassador.

In Pittsfield, brief opening remarks will begin at 7 p.m.. City Mayor James Ruberto is the scheduled guest speaker.

Music provided by Destiny (Diane Lescarbeau and Elaina Colias), who will accompany participants as they walk around the square and carry candles, similar to the ceremony of light, held at Relay For Life events around the country.

The ceremony symbolizes the hope and perseverance with which those affected by cancer all continue to fight.

Candles and light refreshments will be provided. Luminaria that will burn during the Park Square celebration may be purchased at the event in honor of cancer survivors who have or do battle cancer.

Proceeds from Luminaria sales will benefit the 2007 Relay For Life’s of Northern Berkshire and Central/South Berkshire. For details call Laura at 1-888-827-1020, option 3.
