North Adams - A potentially dangerous situation developed on June 26 after police attempted to arrest 27-year-old city resident Deryl Bentley III. Bentley allegedly threatened to jump into flood chutes located along Marshall Street, according to police Director Michael Cozzaglio.
According to Cozzaglio, active, three-year-old arrest warrants were outstanding against Bentley and city law enforcement officers were trying to take Bentley into custody because of the warrants.
The incident occurred during the early evening. City firefighters and Williamstown's police canine unit were called to assist with the situation. Officers at the scene convinced Bentley to cooperate with them and he was subsequently arrested, police said.
Bentley was charged with new offenses, including three counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime, larceny from a building, wanton destruction of property, and two counts of larceny of a credit card. Cozzaglio noted that an investigation into numerous break-ins and credit card thefts is underway and more charges are possible. The investigation is a cooperative effort with Williamstown police, Cozzaglio said.
