Clarksburg – Organizers of a neighborhood crime watch will host an information meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Town Hall.
Teri Goodermote of 35 Jordan Ave. said that the crime watch is being launched in the Wheeler Avenue and North Houghton/Gleason/School street area up to the Clarksburg Elementary School. Anyone interested in participating in the crime watch is encouraged to attend the meeting.
Town police Chief Michael Williams said that he will attend the meeting and discuss the functions and operations of a neighborhood crime watch. Crime watch participants do not act in a law enforcement capacity but can be given guidance about “becoming a good witness,†Williams said.
There may be an opportunity for a North Houghton Street area crime watch to link with a Houghton Street crime watch already in existence in North Adams, Goodermote said. Houghton Street becomes North Houghton Street at the Clarksburg/North Adams municipal border.
Most crime watch initiatives are launched as a way of increasing resident awareness of neighborhood crimes such as theft and vandalism. Neighborhood residents may receive information about creating safer neighborhoods and usually agree to keep an eye on each other’s properties. Crime watch members also agree to call police if they observe suspicious or unusual activity in a particular neighborhood.
Crime watch members do not confront persons who may be acting suspiciously, nor do they take any action during the commission of a crime such as a home invasion or robbery.
