Adams Tag Sale and S’More

By Susan Bush
12:00AM / Tuesday, August 16, 2005

Adams – Tag sale aficionados have reason to rejoice; the town’s Aug. 20 community-wide tag sale event is expected to host 79 participants located along 45 town streets.

Sales will open at 8 a.m. rain or shine, and conclude at 1 p.m. according to information provided by Haley Meczywor, a member of the town’s events planning committee. Maps that identify the participant addresses are available at the Town Hall at 8 Park St., the 92 Park St. Adams Free Library, and the Visitor Center at 3 Hoosac St.. Several downtown businesses may have map copies beginning on Aug. 18. An address list that does not include a map is available at the www.celebrateadams.com Internet web site. A tag-sale host sign-up deadline was Aug. 5.

People from nearly every section of town have signed on as sites for the event. Item selection is expected to cover household items, clothing, some sports equipment and more. As is the tag sale tradition, most sale items are used, sold with an “as is” understanding, and priced by the seller prior to the sale start. The downtown events planning committee members are not responsible for items bought or sold, or item pricing, Meczywor said.

This is the first year for a town-wide organized tag sale and response has been very positive; people were observed at Town Hall asking about map availability during late July. Meczywor said that there are no formal parking plans in place but added that she hopes tag sale visitors use common courtesy and consideration as they travel about town.

On Aug. 17, the Adams Youth Center, Inc. plans to host a “ ‘Round the Campfire Night” at the East Street Community Center playground. The free event kicks off at 6 p.m. and concludes at 9 p.m.; an Aug. 18 rain date is set in case of inclement weather. The agenda features music, story-telling, games, and activities including creating luminaries and assembling marshmallow, chocolate and graham crackers for s’mores treats. Participants are asked to bring a lawn-style chair, blanket, and flashlight to the event.

Additional events set for this week include an Aug. 16 “Concert on the Common” performance by the “Allota Sound” band. The free concert begins at 6:30 p.m.. An Aug. 17 farmer’s market is scheduled to operate at the Depot Street parking lot from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and an Aug. 19 “Movies Under the Stars” event has scheduled a showing of the film “Fat Albert.” The free outdoor movies are presented on the Town Hall lawn. “Showtime” is at dusk and audience members are encouraged to bring blankets, towels, or lawn chairs for seating.

Additional information about the youth center campfire night is available by calling 413-743-3550. Information about the town-wide tag sale or other town events is available by calling 413-743-8300.
